So everybody knows that it gets quite warm, or even toooo (insert expletive) HOT in Granada come the Summer months. So we are looking for some ideas of what to do in Granada in the sunshine and when the the mercury soars ( I think they still use mercury in thermometres, well you know what I am trying to get at). It is easier to start off with suggestions of what not to. That would be pretty much anything between the hours of 2pm to 6. The only thing for it, is to make use of the world famous siesta, enjoyed nowhere else like it is here in Andalucía. Generally speaking, the local timetable suggests that lunch should be eaten from 14-15:30 followed by 15:30-17:30 siesta time. If you want to get something done, especially if it requires interacting with other human beings (that are awake and functioning,) there is only a small window of opportunity to get it done. 10am -1pm is your best bet. So what ideas have we come up with: Swimming pools. For just €5 anyone can use the outdoor swimming pool in the University, in the Fuente Nueva Campus. Open Mon-Sat from 11 to 7. http://www.cadugr.es/piscina/piscinaverano.htm There are many other swimming pools in hotels and restaurants in the suburbs and provincial towns outside of the city that are free to enter as long as you will be spending money in their cafe or restuarant. Traditional music, one of the highlights of the summer is the live flamenco festival Los Veranos del Corral: http://www.losveranosdelcorral.es/ Obviously wining and dining alfresco (aka eating and drinking outdoors) is of course a popular option, for local Granaínos this does not usually commence until about 10pm onwards. Plaza Nueva, Calle Navas, Campo de Principe and Ribera del Genil, some of the best areas to check out. Escaping the city, one of the favourites has to be a walk up the rio Monachil, read our itinerary here. Another good option is to check out the pine forests of the cumbres verdes just past la Zubia. Then of course there is the beach. While Granada is in an inland city, it is only a 45 min drive to the mediterean coast and the glorius beaches of the Costa Tropical. Please leave a comment and some of your own suggestions as the best things to do in Granada...
Visit the Alhambra You can check out the GI guide on what to do at the Alhambra, how to get there and where to buy tickets here: Quick guide to the Alhambra Watch Flamenco in the Caves We have two must read articles on Flamenco in Granada. Firstly check out our general insight into Andalus style Flamenco or alternatively in our life stories / interesting Granada section you can check out our “Sacromonte Story” Enjoy Tapas on Calle Elvira So many to choose from, you could probably quite easily spend a month just moving from one tapa bar to the next to discover which one is your favourite Tapa in Granadda. Enjoy a Gin and Tonic on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Choose your location where you are going to sit and enjoy the afternoon. Our first choice would usually be around the calle Navas / Ganivet area, but also incredibly laid back and enjoyable lazy Sunday afternoons can be found in the Realejo, or alternatively down by Plaza d Bib-Rambla / Plaza de la Romanilla (usually a little more touristy.) Watch Sport in an Irish Pub with the other “Guiris” We are all in Granada and Spain to soak up all the best of the local culture, but sometimes it is nice to have a legitimate reason to escape the sunshine and Canas and find yourself in a nice dark corner of a snug Irish Pub, chatting with some new English speaking friends, about the Sport that it on TV. Particularly over the upcoming EURO 2016, the majority of noon-Spanish football watchers will all be using one of the Irish Pubs as their base for the games. You can find Paddy’s pub on Calle Santa Escolastica in the Realejo or Hannigans just off the Gran Via on calle Cetti Meriem. Get your dance moves on at Granada Diez Grasnada Diez is famous throught the Erasmus world and global student community for their students night on a Wednesday aka Ladies Night @G10. However it will be banging out the tunes and filled to the rafters with the young and beautiful from Thursday through to Sunday night as well. If you arrive before midnight you will be sure to be the first people to arrive. Party doesn’t usually kick off till about 2am each night with closing time not until well...
